Duties and Responsibilities of an Interior Designer

An Interior Designer usually projects their skills and experience to:

  • Determine the client’s goals and requirements for the project
  • Develops design concepts and produces contract documents based on client needs.
  • Sketch preliminary design plans, including electrical and partition layouts
  • Takes accurate as-built measurements for developing floor plans and elevations.
  • Create a timeline for the interior design project and estimate project costs
  • Advise client on interior design factors such as space planning, layout and use of furnishings or equipment and color coordination.
  • Specify materials and furnishings, such as lighting, furniture, wall finishes, flooring, and plumbing fixtures
  • Manages the coordination and logistics of product deliveries and installation.
  • Coordinate with other professionals, such as contractors, architects and engineers to ensure job success.
  • Formulate environmental plan to be practical, esthetic and conducive to intended purposes, such as raising productivity or selling merchandise.
  • Use computer-aided drafting (CAD) and related software to produce construction documents.
  • Render design ideas in form of paste-ups or drawings
  • Research and decide on materials and products sourcing
  • Visit the site after the project is complete to ensure that the client is satisfied
  • Develop schematics and floor plans clearly defining furniture and display placement.
